Challenge

Following its acquisition from The Scottish Courts and Tribunal Service, The Highland Council set out to transform Inverness Castle from a largely inaccessible landmark into a vibrant visitor attraction and cultural focal point for the Highlands. The project required the sensitive repurposing of a complex Category A Listed building to celebrate Highland heritage and culture while preserving its historic character, alongside careful coordination between stakeholders, robust cost planning, value and risk management, and contractor procurement to ensure the vision could be delivered efficiently and transparently.

Solution

G&T provided comprehensive Cost Management services, including cost planning, value and risk management, and contractor procurement, helping to maintain financial control while delivering The Highland Council’s vision. Working with the wider project team, the scheme combined sensitive conservation with new interventions, including restored historic fabric, improved accessibility, a contemporary Saltire inspired link building with visitor facilities, and a new renewable energy centre, transforming the castle into an immersive visitor experience.

Outcome

The redevelopment has transformed Inverness Castle into a vibrant cultural destination celebrating the heritage and identity of the Highlands while opening the historic landmark to the public for the first time in generations. By balancing conservation with contemporary design, the project has created an engaging visitor experience with improved accessibility, modern amenities and enhanced environmental performance, supporting cultural engagement and the economic growth of Inverness and the wider Highlands.
