Challenge
The Koko Club, encompassing the Grade II Listed Victorian theatre from 1900, a former piano factory dating back to the 1800s, and the Hope and Anchor pub, stood as iconic structures in Camden's rich music heritage. Â The challenge was to meticulously restore and modernise these historic buildings into a cohesive, contemporary music and arts venue, while preserving their architectural integrity. Â This endeavour required balancing the integration of advanced facilities with the conservation of the site's historical essence.
Solution
G&T provided Cost Management and Project Management services, guiding the restoration process to ensure both financial prudence and project excellence. Â Collaborating with Archer Humphryes Architects and interior designers Pirajean Lees, we facilitated the creation of a 50,000 sq ft multi-use space. Â The venue now boasts live streaming facilities, a radio station, a shop, a late-night pizzeria, and a bar hosting intimate live performances. Â Members also have access to a roof terrace conservatory, a recording studio, a piano room, and a cocktail bar situated within the restored copper dome.
Outcome
The revitalised Koko Club stands as a testament to Camden's enduring musical legacy, seamlessly blending historical architecture with modern amenities. Â The discovery and development of a fly tower performance space near the main stage, achieved with the support of English Heritage, offers an intimate setting reminiscent of early 1900s performances. Â G&T's strategic management ensured the project was delivered on time and within budget, re-establishing the venue as a permier destination for artists and audiences alike.
