Challenge
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust set out to revolutionise emergency care by developing England’s first purpose-built specialist emergency care hospital. The goal was to centralise and enhance emergency services for over 500,000 residents across Northumberland and North Tyneside. This ambitious £70 million project aimed to provide round-the-clock consultant-led care, necessitating a facility equipped with advanced diagnostics, critical care units, and specialist wards. The challenge lay in delivering a complex, high-specification hospital that would set a new benchmark for emergency healthcare in the UK.
Solution
G&T was appointed to provide comprehensive Cost Management, Project Management, and Life Cycle Costing services. Utilising Building Information Modelling, G&T coordinated the design and construction processes to ensure efficiency and precision. The 29,000³¾Â² facility was meticulously planned to include a state-of-the-art emergency department, operating theatres, critical care units, maternity and paediatric services, and advanced diagnostic imaging suites. G&T's strategic oversight ensured that the project met the Trust's objectives within the stipulated budget and timeframe.
Outcome
Completed in June 2015, the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital stands as a pioneering model for emergency healthcare delivery in the UK. The facility offers 24/7 consultant-led emergency services, significantly improving patient outcomes through rapid access to specialised care. G&T's involvement was instrumental in realising the Trust's vision, delivering a landmark healthcare facility that has set new standards for emergency medical services nationwide.
