Challenge
The Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh embarked on a significant redevelopment to create world-class spaces for the nation’s outstanding collection of Scottish art. The project aimed to double the size of the gallery’s exhibition space while enhancing public access and improving visitor flow. Delivered beneath a Category A Listed building, within a UNESCO World Heritage Site and above live railway tunnels, the project involved substantial logistical, structural and heritage challenges, all within a high-profile public setting.
Solution
G&T provided a full suite of services including Project Management, Cost Management, and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy. We led the coordination of multiple stakeholders, managed procurement and programme delivery, and ensured all works complied with safety and CDM regulations. Our team provided accurate cost planning and risk management throughout, while facilitating safe, phased construction within a live public environment. The careful sequencing of works allowed the gallery to remain partially operational during key stages of the programme.
Outcome
The completed redevelopment has transformed the Scottish National Gallery, doubling the available exhibition space and significantly enhancing the visitor experience. Delivered on time and within budget, the project has been widely recognised — including winning the Refurbishment Revitalisation award at the RICS Scotland Awards 2024. G&T’s integrated approach ensured design ambition was achieved while maintaining rigorous control over cost, programme, and health and safety across a complex, heritage-sensitive site.
