Challenge
The University of Huddersfield was looking to modernise its historic Ramsden Building, a 140-year-old Grade II Listed structure, to accommodate the International Study Centre, International Office, and the Graduate School. The challenge was to refurbish the building to meet contemporary educational standards while preserving its architectural heritage and enhancing sustainability.
Solution
G&T provided Cost Management and Project Management services for the extensive refurbishment. The project involved updating mechanical and electrical systems, the installation of air-source heat pumps to replace the existing heating system, and revealing original architectural features hidden by previous alterations. The design, led by GSSArchitecture, focused on sustainability and heritage preservation, aligning with the university's decarbonisation goals.
Outcome
The Ramsden Building operates as a net-zero carbon facility, offering modern spaces for international students and postgraduate researchers. The refurbishment enhances the building's historic character while providing state-of-the-art facilities, supporting the university's innovation agenda and commitment to sustainability.
