Challenge
Amentum, a leading global engineering and project management firm, was advancing a significant defence infrastructure programme in South East England. As the project approached RIBA Stage 3 sign-off, it became clear that the existing delivery schedule was based on incorrect assumptions, making the baseline undeliverable. This misalignment presented serious risks to the programme's timeline, cost certainty and overall success.
Solution
G&T was appointed to provide Programme and Project Controls services to address these challenges. Working closely with Amentum's team, G&T developed a robust and achievable schedule aligned with RIBA Stage 3 requirements. A detailed cost estimate was produced to establish a revised change control baseline. G&T also implemented a professional risk management system, supporting the development of comprehensive risk and opportunity schedules. By calculating project risk exposure and advising on appropriate contingency allowances, G&T strengthened the project's resilience. In addition, a reconciliation document was created to align the approved baseline with the revised version, providing evidence to support the necessary changes. G&T further enhanced delivery across the wider programme by developing best practice techniques for baseline and change management control.
Outcome
G&T's expertise enabled the project to achieve a realistic and deliverable schedule, supported by a robust cost estimate and a comprehensive risk management approach. This mitigated immediate risks and set the foundation for long-term programme success. In recognition of its impact, G&T was awarded a place on Amentum’s long-term framework to provide project controls and commercial support across the wider programme and future works. G&T’s continued involvement has enhanced the quality and consistency of delivery, including support for a £1.6 billion new manufacturing facility, helping to reinforce Amentum’s leadership in defence infrastructure development.
