Challenge
The redevelopment of Bush House South West Wing involves the refurbishment and expansion of a nine-storey 1930s building within King’s College London’s Strand campus. Formerly occupied by the BBC World Service and HMRC, the building must be transformed into a welcoming, flexible academic environment while retaining its historic character. The project needs to deliver a new Student Centre, Agora, interdisciplinary academic space, showcase areas and flexible social and study space, alongside a rear extension and upgraded infrastructure to support the university’s wider campus ambitions.
Solution
G&T is providing Cost Management, Employer's Agent and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services, supporting the refurbishment, extension and fit-out of academic, teaching and student facilities in a complex campus setting. Our role is helping to maintain control of cost, programme and delivery while works progress around the university’s operational requirements. We are also supporting the coordination of new and upgraded spaces, while helping the project balance modern educational needs with the careful retention of the building’s heritage quality.
Outcome
The redevelopment will create a more connected and adaptable home for King’s, bringing together support services, teaching, research, events and social space to improve the student and staff experience. New academic space for 200 staff, a thematic focus on Digital and AI, showcase areas and flexible places to meet and study will support collaboration across the campus. G&T’s cost and Employer's Agent input is helping to test decisions against budget and maintain programme certainty to support a successful phased transformation of this important Strand building.
